Intent: As a Film Studies department, we aim to offer students a rich and engaging experience of film, combining both theoretical and practical learning. Students explore a wide range of genres, styles and global cinema, gaining insight into the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking. Through practical tasks, they develop skills in editing, sound, cinematography and storytelling. Our curriculum also explores the evolution of cinema, from the pioneering Lumière Brothers in 1895 to modern blockbusters like The Avengers (2018). We foster a deep understanding of the film industry, encouraging analytical thinking, creativity, and a genuine appreciation for the art of film.
At KS3, we introduce pupils to the foundations of film form and key technical aspects. In Year 7, students begin with animation, learning core visual storytelling techniques. Year 8 builds on this by exploring gender representation in film. By Year 9, students are equipped to analyse the impactful 2019 war-comedy-drama Jojo Rabbit, a film that provokes discussion and reflection, resonating deeply with the values and experiences of our school community.
