Watch & Clock Repairer

What the job entails:

Watch and clock repairers mend clocks and watches. They open them up and use eyeglasses to see the tiny parts. If there are damaged parts they either mend them or replace them with new ones. Often the parts are so tiny that they have to use tweezers to pick them up and move them. Some of the repairs are complicated but others are fairly simple. These include replacing watch batteries and adjusting watchstraps to fit the customer. Some are made up of metal links so they use special tools to work with these.

Routes and choices while at school:

There is no set route to a career as a watch and clock repairer. However, a good general education will help you compete with other people for a job or apprenticeship. Some employers would want you to have some GCSEs at grades 4 or C or better, or equivalent, especially in maths, English and science. You may need these for some courses too. Design and technology would also be useful.

Pay:

Pay when starting is about £16,000 to £18,000 per year. When experienced, it is about £25,000 to £30,000. For experts with a lot of experience, pay can rise to about £40,000.
